Tempietto, San Pietro in Montorio, Rome
Tempietto, San Pietro in Montorio, Rome
1502
Donato Bramante
A small commemorative tomb (martyrium) in the courtyard of San Pietro in Montorio. Built to mark the spot where S. Peter was martyred, it was commissioned by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain.
The Tempietto is a perfect architectural gem by Bramante and it is considered a masterpiece of High Renaissance Italian architecture.
It resembles a small Roman circular temple, and only 4.5m in diameter internally, with a Doric peristyle surround.
Perfectly proportioned using the Golden Ratio, it has inspired countless architects through the ages.
