St Luke Old Street in London
Nicholas Hawksmoor and John James1727-1773
One of the six churches designed by Hawksmoor for the “Commission for Building Fifty New Churches”.
This design was a collaboration with John James. Hawksmoor was principally involved with the obelisk spire and staircase wings.
The church was heavily bombed during WWII and nearly demolished.
Fortunately a use was fond for the decommissioned church! Today it is home to the London Symphony Orchestra.
