St John Horsleydown - Hawksmoor
St John Horsleydown in London
Nicholas Hawksmoor and John James1726–1733
One of the six churches designed by Hawksmoor for the “Commission for Building Fifty New Churches”.
This design was a collaboration with John James. Hawksmoor was principally involved with the wonderfully eccentric Ionic spire .
Unfortunately the church was heavily bombed during the WWII Blitz and was demolished in 1975. A terrible shame as the sister church of St Luke's, equally badly damaged by bombing was saved and is today the home of the London Symohony Orchestra.
