Hawksmoor Trio - Spectacular Spires!
Three London Churches
1727
Architect: Nicholas Hawksmoor with John James.
Three of the churches designed by Hawksmoor for the “Commission for Building Fifty New Churches”.
St Luke Old Street (Available as an individual print here)
This design was a collaboration with John James. Hawksmoor was principally involved with the obelisk spire and staircase wings.
The church was heavily bombed during WWII and nearly demolished.
Fortunately a use was fond for the decommissioned church! Today it is home to the London Symphony Orchestra.
Christ Church, Spitalfields (Available as an individual print here)
Probably Hawksmoor's most famous church it makes an appearance in many films and novels.
I have drawn it as it appeared before it was altered in the mid 19th Century.
Most importantly the steeple has its finials, vases and dormers. I think this gives the church a definite Gothick character.
St John Horsleydown (Available as an individual print here)
This design was a collaboration with John James. Hawksmoor was principally involved with the wonderfully eccentric Ionic spire .
Unfortunately the church was heavily bombed during the WWII Blitz and was demolished in 1975. A terrible shame as the sister church of St Luke's, equally badly damaged by bombing was saved.
